Description

 

Beat together the butter and the ½ cup sugar until creamy.

 

Gradually mix in the flour, then stir in the vanilla, salt, and walnuts.

 

Using a about a tablespoon (or less) of the dough, shape into balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

 

Bake at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes, until VERY LIGHTLY browned. Ovens vary.  I have seen these cookies take 12 minutes, and I have seen them take 30 minutes.  Watch them . . . it takes about 30 seconds to go from just perfect to "crispy critter"!  The tops should just be a very,  very light brown, the bottoms will be a bit browner . . .that's ok.  If the bottoms get burned on the first tray, reduce your temperature by about 50 degrees for subsequent trays.

 

Cool thoroughly, then roll in more 10X sugar.  It is important that they be ABSOLOUTELY cool when you roll them in the sugar.
